Strange Fruit

FOR OUTSIDERS. BY OUTSIDERS.

Lifestyles repeat.
Life starts later.
Or it doesn't.

Strange Fruit is an independent publisher and cultural production studio based in Johannesburg, South Africa. We move between essays, periodicals, visual editions, collaborations, and objects — work produced with the gravity of a dossier and the surface tension of print.

Our focus is outsider literature and art from the black middle class interior: the space between aspiration and apathy, between the citadel and the street, between what the market wants and what the culture is actually doing. We’re not interested in the periphery as a gimmick. We’re interested in it as a point of view.

Strange Fruit is for those positioned laterally to the mainstream — by class, by geography, by taste, by refusal. We exist because that position produces the most interesting cultural work, and because it has historically been the least well-served by traditional publishing.

Discontent

The periodical. Cultural analysis in print pressure.

Essays, reports, and visual studies arranged with classical editorial rigour instead of infinite-feed drift. Published when it’s ready. Read when it matters.
