Outsider art and culture refer to creative expressions that exist outside the boundaries of mainstream or conventional artistic and cultural norms. This term encompasses a wide range of artistic practices, cultural movements, and individual expressions that often challenge traditional artistic conventions or arise from marginalized or unconventional perspectives.
D.I.Y Lifestyle: Outsider art often comes from individuals who are self-taught or have minimal formal training in art. It may reflect unique viewpoints, personal experiences, or cultural backgrounds that are not typically represented in mainstream art.
Marginal & Raw Expression: Artists within outsider culture include all kinds of people but the common denominator is that their work often provides a platform to express social commentary or challenge societal and aesthetic norms.Outsider art values authenticity and raw expression over technical skill or adherence to traditional artistic techniques. It can include naive art, folk art, graffiti, street art, and other forms that prioritize personal expression and creativity.
Diverse Forms and Mediums: Outsider culture is not limited to visual art but extends to music, literature, fashion, performance art, and other creative endeavors. It celebrates diversity in artistic forms and mediums, embracing creativity in all its unconventional forms.
Community and Identity: Outsider art and culture often foster communities of like-minded individuals who share similar experiences or perspectives. It can provide a sense of belonging and empowerment for artists and participants who feel marginalized by mainstream culture.
As outsiders we live to challenge the established media, art and cultural institutions by questioning traditional definitions of aesthetic value by allowing viewers and participants to reconsider what constitutes artistic value and who gets to define it.
